I have never defined myself as a "LinkedIn expert", even though I sometimes hold courses and consultancies focused on this social network. In fact, personal positioning activities go beyond a single medium. Nonetheless, I have no doubts in considering LinkedIn the most effective platform for professionals who want to obtain new job opportunities or clients (in some specific fields, not all). Since, as Marshall McLuhan said , "many good arguments are ruined by a fool who knows what he's talking about" , in this post I will write what I think without worrying about what the greatest experts say on how to best use LinkedIn. I'm not saying it's a totally useless activity, but I believe that the most solid signals of interest are only three: the number of conversations, the shares generated and the leads obtained . The rest is all appearance or waste of time. Stop with formulas In connection requests, this ritual formula is often used: “Hi, how are you? I see we have some common interests/connections, so I'd love to add you to my network!” . After the third time we read this conventional phrase, we understand very well that you are sending it urbi et orbi to anyone. Invent your own, or send the blank connection request.
You'll make a better impression! Only comment on those who deserve a response. There are social media "stars" who are overwhelmed with commitments and work, they don't have time to respond to comments or take every single conversation into consideration. Yet the reason why we are on LinkedIn is precisely conversations and connections: unlike other platforms, it is with these two activities that you can get the best opportunities, both in business and in life. Stop persisting with the messages! If after sending a first message the person doesn't reply to you, you cannot insist another six times by writing sentences like: "I would like to know what you think of our offer" . Or : “If you're not interested now, when will you be?” .
